I HEART WINE Club, Vol. 3 Food & Drink

Welcome to According to Amanda’s unsophisticated I HEART WINE Club. I say unsophisticated because I am in no way a sommelier. I am not a connoisseur of fine wines or skilled at tasting and comparing. What I am good at, is drinking wine and telling you about it!

If you like wine as much as I do, you should also check out our past parties!

The ‘Method’

Once a month, a group of girlfriends and I yank off the lulu’s for a night, put on our big girl adult clothes and sip fine wines like ladies. The host picks the 3 wines for the evening and keeps it a secret except for the grape variety. We also attempt to pick 1 cheap, 1 expensive and 1 middle of the road priced bottle. As a group we sample one wine at a time. First noting the colour or appearance, then the aroma and finally the taste and after-taste of each wine. I am making this sound quite organized and structured, but really we look, smell, drink and gab = our unsophisticated wine tasting!

Today’s review is a set of 3 chardonnays from France

I HEART Wine Club Vol 3 Picture

Fat Bastard, Chardonnay, 2014, France, $14.95 CDN

Bottle Description: Medium straw colour; apple, melon, pear and oak aromas; dry, apple fruit and vanilla flavours, buttery texture, well balanced with a medium-length finish.

According to Amanda… the verdict is:
  • Beautiful clean, bright colour
  • Light apple aroma
  • Well balanced and flavourful but not overpowering, clean and crisp
  • Light pleasant aftertaste
  • I love this wine and will definitely be buying again!

9/10

Latour Bourgogne, Chardonnay, 2013, France, $19.95 CDN

Bottle Description: Pale straw colour; aromas of citrus, apple and mineral. Medium-bodied with a some apple on the palate followed by a clean, crisp finish.

According to Amanda… the verdict is:
  • Don’t enjoy the smell, very tangy and smells of apple juice
  • Taste is too acidic and not very smooth
  • I describe this with one word, “meh.”

6.5/10

Piat D’Or , Chardonnay, 2013, France, $10.45 CDN

Bottle Description: This Chardonnay has aromas of citrus, apple and pear, and is fresh with fruity flavours.

According to Amanda… the verdict is:
  • Stronger yellow colouring than the previous 2 wines
  • There is a very unique and interesting smoky aroma – no idea where this came from but all of us thought that was what we smelled
  • Taste was quite complex but didn’t seem to match what we were smelling
  • I enjoyed this wine but enjoyed the Fat Bastard chardonnay much more

7.5/10

And because here at I HEART WINE Club we love wine, why not a fun wine fact!

Impress your guests at your next dinner party with some random facts about wine! Each month you can add to your vast knowledge and become a walking encyclopedia. One purely dedicated to all things wine!

In ancient Greece, a dinner host would take the first sip of wine to assure guests the wine was not poisoned, hence the phrase “drinking to one’s health.” “Toasting” started in ancient Rome when the Romans continued the Greek tradition but started dropping a piece of toasted bread into each wine glass to temper undesirable tastes or excessive acidity.
