I HEART WINE Club, Vol. 2 Food & Drink

Welcome to According to Amanda’s unsophisticated I HEART WINE Club, Vol 2. I say unsophisticated because I am in no way a sommelier. I am not a connoisseur of fine wines or skilled at tasting and comparing. What I am good at, is drinking wine and telling you about it!

If you like wine as much as I do, you should also check out our last party!

The ‘Method’

Once a month a group of girlfriends and I yank off the lulu’s for a night, put on our big girl adult clothes and sip fine wines like ladies. The host picks the 3 wines for the evening and keeps it a secret except for the grape variety. We also attempt to pick 1 cheap, 1 expensive and 1 middle of the road priced bottle. As a group we sample one wine at a time. First noting the colour or appearance, then the aroma and finally the taste and after-taste of each wine. I am making this sound quite organized and structured, but really we look, smell, drink and gab = our unsophisticated wine tasting!

Today’s review is a set of 3 cabernet/merlots from the Niagara Peninsula

I Heart Wine Club Bottle Photo

Open, Cab 2 – Merlot, Niagara Peninsula, $11.95 CDN

Bottle Description: Clear ruby red colour; raspberry, cherry, plum and touch of oak spice aromas; dry medium body; round red berry and plum flavours with a mineral note, just a hint of tannin

According to Amanda… the verdict is:
  • very dark purple/red, deep colour is misleading to how mild the wine tasted
  • Very little smell
  • Not a very robust wine, nice lasting taste on the tongue
  • I could easily drink a lot of this without realizing it!
  • Great dinner party wine as it wouldn’t overpower food or for a late night sipping wine

7/10

Inniskillin, Cabernet Merlot, Niagara Peninsula, 2014, $14.95 CDN

Bottle Description: Medium deep ruby; aromas and flavours of oak, cassis, plum, blackberry jam, vanilla and cedar; dry, medium bodied with good depth of fruit, structured tannins and good length.

According to Amanda… the verdict is:
  • Very dark purple
  • Smells fruity
  • Bland taste, hallow, not much flavour, a little watery
  • Would balance well in a sangria

6.5/10

No. 99 Wayne Gretzkey Estates, Cabernet Merlot, Niagara Peninsula, $13.95 CDN

Bottle Description: Medium ruby colour; aromas and flavours of dark berries, plum, and smoky pepper; dry, full-bodied, with hints of oak on the finish.

According to Amanda… the verdict is:
  • Very dark
  • Caramel highlights (although looking at the description I’m not sure what we were thinking!)
  • Full bodied
  • Fantastic paired with steak or cheeses
  • This was hands down the group favourite and I will be buying this one for sure!

9/10
