Girls Night Out with Paint Nite Travel

2016-02 Paint Nite PThe last few weeks have been long. So long. The kids both took turns being sick, my computer crashed, the house was a disaster and I was at the end of my patience. This mom was in serious need of some adult time and what better way than to head to a restaurant, relax with a drink, laugh with a friend and paint to my heart’s content?! Paint Nite was exactly what I needed!

The Paint Nite Experience

There are multiple Paint Nite events offered every single night at restaurants all over North America. You pick the painting and the location that fits you best and order your tickets online. In Durham Region, where I participated, there were 3-4 offered every night. Just enter your city into their event search and a list of all nearby locations pop-up. You can also follow your local Paint Nite Facebook group too to learn about upcoming events.

We arrived early at the restaurant and enjoyed a drink at the bar while the artist set up. On a long row of tables easels were placed with 3 paint brushes, the required paints and a cup of water to rinse the brushes. It is recommended to arrive at least 15 mins early to pick your seat and order drinks and appetizers. About a quarter arrived early enough to have dinner at the restaurant before the fun began.

Our artist for the night was Liesl Scheppat. She was fantastic! I didn’t really know what to expect but she was both immensely entertaining and a fabulous artist. When we weren’t laughing from her jokes we were learning how to paint a night sky or a tree. Her instructions were simple and straightforward. No experience was necessary.

Liesl would demonstrate each step as we went and then we would have the opportunity to attempt it on our own canvas. When it was our turn to paint she would walk through the group helping with the technique and answering questions.

Once our masterpieces were complete, each group took turns getting their picture taken by Liesl (to be emailed out after the night was over) and headed home with their priceless artwork.

Paint Nite: Pros

  • Paint Nite takes drinking and driving seriously. It reminded us to ensure we had a DD or had lined up alternative transportation when we ordered our tickets online, in the reminder email sent before the night and the artist also spoke about it again at the beginning of the night. They have even partnered with an app called LYFT  to offer their guests with $20 off your first ride with their coupon code.
  • Great music!
  • Instruction was clear and easy to follow. You didn’t need to have gone to art school to participate. The less you care for perfection, the more fun you have!

Paint Nite: Cons

  • I found that especially at the end of the evening I was feeling rushed to finish.
  • Because of the speed of the instruction there wasn’t actually much time to drink while painting. My beer sat and warmed up till I had time to drink it at the end.

I wasn’t sure which category, Pro or Con, to put price. The listed price on the website is $45 per person which in my opinion is on the high side especially when you add drinks on top of that. BUT there are lots of ways to get discounted tickets either through Groupons or coupons. As a consumer, I would prefer to see a lower consistent price posted online with the occasional deal.

According to Amanda… the verdict is:

I loved my evening out with Paint Nite! I hadn’t painted since high school and I forgot how much I enjoyed it! I will definitely do it again and will make sure to use a coupon code. If the pace slowed down a little I could have enjoyed my beer a little more and completed my finishing touches in relaxation but otherwise the evening with perfect!

Thanks for reading! Here’s a Coupon!

In case you were wondering: Paint Nite Durham Region covered the cost of the ticket for me and offered a discounted ticket for my friend. Although very thankful for the gift, my opinions were not influenced and are 100% my own.
